Word of Warning About Hot Cars and Kids

As temperatures rise and record highs continue in Florida, it's time for a reminder about the dangers of leaving infants in hot cars. Two babies died this month in Texas and Missouri, with 539 such deaths being recorded since groups started keeping track in 1998. The death is often an honest but horrible accident. Parents are usually so new to the routine that a silent or sleeping child can slip their minds and they forget they're there altogether. It happened to a boss of mine years ago - but fortunately she remembered the child just moments after she arrived at work. One recommendation is to always put something you need, such as a purse or briefcase, in the back seat so you have to look back there when leaving your vehicle. Another idea is to put a reminder like the diaper bag with you in the front seat. Notes work too, so write yourself a checklist of your routine when driving from Point A to Point B.
