Federal health advisers want the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to place new limits on hydrocodone, a potent pain killer that consistently ranks as one of the most-abused medications in the United States each year. The panel of drug safety experts want hydrocodone reclassified as a schedule II drug, limiting which kinds of medical professionals can write a prescription for it and how many times it can be refilled. Those who voted for the move said it would send a signal to doctors about the potential dangers of hydrocodone drugs. In 2011, doctors wrote more than 131 million prescriptions for hydrocodone, making it the most prescribed drug in the country.
