Sarasota County is not immune from the explosion in cases of babies being born to mothers who abused prescription drugs during pregnancy. Many of those newborns suffer from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), enduring terrible withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, abdominal pain, rapid breathing and sometimes seizures. The 2012 Florida Legislature created the Statewide Task Force on Prescription Drug Abuse and Newborns, which released its final report with recommendations to address the scope of issues facing drug addicted mothers and their babies. The goal is to provide prevention strategies and programs to improve the outcomes for these children. You can read more about the report in this article, which also includes a link to the full report.
