After three days of tours, questions and document reviews, assessors from the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission held their exit interview with Sheriff Knight and members of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office this morning. While we won’t see their final report for a few weeks, the accreditation team used words like “high morale” and “professional” to describe Sarasota County Jail staff and found the facility to be clean and well-maintained. The jail has been accredited since 1997, and while maintaining accreditation is a voluntary process, we consider this external review to be a great accountability tool and a way to assure Sarasota County and its citizens that staff goes “above and beyond” when it comes to the care, custody and control of inmates at the Sarasota County Jail. We will announce the FCAC's official decision on re-accreditation when we receive it.
